NORTH Vancouver Canadian Alliance MP Ted
White says the fuss about him running for a
third term is “much ado about nothing.”

“If people aren't happy with me running again, they don’t
have to vote for me. But so many people wanted me to run,”
said White, in response to charges leveiled against him by
North Vancouver Libera! candidate Bill Bell earlier this week.

Giving his nomination acceptance speech at the Lonsdale
Quay Hotel on Tuesday evening, Bell asked the assembled
crowd if “anyone could telf me what this guy (‘Vhite) has done
for Norch Vancouver?”

White said he has been working toward, lower taxes, a bal-
anced budget, controlled spending, and <nanges co the Young
Offenders Act.

“I consider myself their servant,” White said of his con-
stituents. “They pay my salary and I do their bidding. If they
said they wanted me to approve all the (EIRDC) grant applica-
dons, then I would do it. But that’s not what P'm hearing.

“Mostly I hear complaints that taxes are too high. They see
their hard-earned taxes shovelled off the back of the truck like
there’s no tomorrow.” ;

Bell also said White's portrayal of immigrants and refugees
“insults all of our intelligence.” Retorted White, “He’s just
talking nonsense. I’m an immigrant nryself. But even the audi-
tor general said the immigration policy was terribly flawed, and

An Ipsos-Reid poll released on Thursday suggested the
Canadian Alliance has a popularity rating of 47% in B.C., com-
pared to 38% for the Liberais, seven per cent for the NDP and
five per cent tor the Conservatives.

Nationally, the Canadian Alfiance has a 28% approval rate
(up eight per cent) compared to the Liberals’ 45% (down seven .
per cent).

White was wary of the B.C. poll results. He said voters here ©
often confused federal and provincial politics. However he
noted the “excitement on the ground” for the party in Ontario
(currently a Liberal stronghold). The Canadian Alliance has
just received its highest ever approval rating in the province at

White said he had been present in the House for votes only
15% of the time in recent months — but said that was because
his party had assigned him to the House on non-voting days.
He said he was in his riding talking to constituents nn Mondays
and Tuesdays, and in Ortawa Wednesdays through Fridays.

“It is a matter of record that I have been present in the
House of Commons every single day I've been assigned by my -
party and many more besides,” he said. “Friday is my duty day,
which Bell well knows. Most votes take place on a Tuesday. It
doesn’t take a mathematician to work out that plays havoc with
my voting record.

“Nor that jt matters — (the House of Commons) is a dys-
functional, dictatorial, disgusting place. It badly needs reform,
and that's never going to happen if people like Bill Bell get to .
go there.” .

White said aggressive, negative campaign tactics “backfired
on Warren Kinsella (the 1997 Liberal candidate in North
Vancouver) and it will backfire on Bill. If that’s the best he can:
