Married seniors
make good pariners

step for her since she was
doing it alone. She took a
series of lessons at her local
driving range, practised
weekly for a couple of
months, and finally went out
to play as a single at a local
municipal course.

The first time Debbie
went out to play, it was a
Saturday afternoon.
Understandably, the golf
course was packed with all
the women who hadn’t been
able to get the highly covet-
ed Saturday morning tee
times.

She was put into a four-
some with three other
women who were beginners
as well. There were pretty
nice girls, and the fact that
were all beginners made the
round kind of fun, but
Debbie’s only exposure to
men that first day out was a
foursome of junior boys
behind her who constandy
hit into them and never
apologized.

Still, she made some golf
friends, and they planned to
play again in the future.

The second time Debbie
went out to play and meet
men, she did it on a week-
day afternoon. To her great
disappointment, she was put
into a foursome with a mid-
dle aged Japanese couple
and their daughter. None of
the three spoke English, and
although they had the best

of manners, it was a tough
day. Debbie ended up
going in after nine holes
because she was so exhaust-
ed from smiling politely
and taking pictures of the
family on each tee for them.

Debbie continued to go
to the same local municipal
course on different days,
and while she saw men in
groups of two and three all
over the course, not once:}
did she end up in a four:
some with any of them.”

She finally asked some-
one in the pro shop to*
explain this. An older guy
who worked there told her
that men don’t like to have
women included in their .
foursomes, so he never did
it. He told her that most*
men he knew would rather
play as a threesome than
have a beginner woman put
with their group.

Fortunately Debbie met
a nice accountant at a bar
not long after, and she’s
given up golf.

As far as my own person-
al experience goes, I have to
admit I’ve met some pretty
nice guys playing golf.
Most of them are seniors, of
course, and happily married,
which makes them just_
about perfect for me, since

I'd rather not mix my pas-
sion for golf with my other
passions.
