BRANDON Flores skat-
ed for five hours almost
every day this summer

at Lonsdale Rec Centre.

The North Vancouver teen
wasn't quite ready to stop.

The 14-year-old was one of
many rollerbladers, skateboard-
ers and BMX bikers who visited
the Outer Limits skate park, a
summer program run by the
North Van Recreation
Commission. The program
ended last week, leaving skaters
like Flores out on the streets,

“It was a good place to go
and hang out and spend time
instead of sitting arourd the
house,” he said. “Ir vas a good
stress release for me.”

But the skaters, who packed
the facility during peak hours,
aren’t leaving the park without
an impression.

“TP wish everybody could
watch them,” said Gary Young,
director of the rec commission,
“They are excellent athletes and
i’'s wonderful what they can
do.” A tesk force has scheduled
several meetings with young
people and is iooking at the need
tur a permanent facility in the
Lonsdale area.

Brandon’s mozher, Laura,
praised the rec centre for offer-
ing a safe place for her son to
spend so much time. Staff super-
vised the skaters, making sure
they were wearing helmets and
helping participants learn tricks.
She wouid like to sec a place
nearby where Brandon could
continue to practise his skills.

While William Griffin and
Seylynn have concrete skating
bowls, Brandon says indocr are-
nas offer a better environment
for kids to learn the sport. The

the arena are more suited to less
experienced skaters.

at Seylynn was built, it continues
to be a popular spor. Young says
there are very few accidents or
problems at either of the bowls.

“Twenty years ago, people
called this a fad,” he said. “It’s a
fad that won't go away.”

He has been fascinated to
watch how youth have adapted

“It’s a different concept of
balance and perception of
sport,” he said. “I can’r imagine
my two fect locked together, but
they have no problem with it.”

With somewhere to practise,
Brandon would like to take his
skills to new heights. “When I
get berter I'd tike to work my
way to a professional level,” he
said. “I want to take this up as a
serious thing.”
