‘Nottingham, 22 - Sunday, July 11, 1999 — North Shore News On July 20th, Charles and Leisha Judd will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary. Their contentment is obvious as they remi- nisce over 7 decades of marital bliss. Fate brought them together in sort of a fury tale way, with the prince now age 97, and the princess 89. Both have weath- ered the storms of adjusting to life in a new country. When he was presented with a heavenly opportunity, Charles wisely __ accepted, and their life changed forever. Charles was born in England, in 1902. He was 9 when the fam- ly came to Canada, settling in the farming community of Grafton, Ontario. Charles recalls: "1 thought I must be in s-heaven. I loved that place." In ‘the little country school the ‘kids would come to class in their bare feet! A far cry from the large school he had attend- _ed in England. Pees \ . After the morning milking, he rode his bike 5 miles to high school at Colborne. He was a good stu- dent and became the editor of the school paper. Charles says: "I had a wonderful child- hood." Only Dutch was spo- ken at home, and Leisha had great difficulty with the English language in public school. Finishing high school, Leisha enrolled in the Shaw Business College where she became fluent in English... In Toronto, Charles decid- ed to join a harvest excursion to Carberry, Manitoba. Ir sounded like a great idea, but in reality, pitching sheaves was uninteresting work. After sev- eral weeks, his total carnings were $200. With the harvest finished, it was time to return home. A train ride can be many things to many people. Charles found the journey provided an opportunity to chat with other people. He was neither the first nor the last person to be suck- ered into a poker game. Poker can be a learning experience for an unseasoned player, as Charles found out. He fost his entire $200 — bur he smartened up mighty fast! Back in Toronto, Charles accepted a job with the Canadian = Elgin’ = Watch Company and remained there for seventeen years. During this time, he decid- ed to attend night school to meet young ladies. He chose an art class because it required little homework. One day while ‘passing the door of the English classroom, Charles spied a beautiful girl. with blonde hair and sparkling blue Caring you can count on. Her dazzling smile struck him like 2 bolt of lightning! With his adrenalin rushing, he told his triends: "That's the girl I'm going to marry." So he switched classes and took a seat directly behind Leisha. Soon Prince Charming was walking the princess home after school and showering her with boxes of chocolates. It wasn't long before the couple was driving to the movies in Charles’ Ford Coupe. The first movie they watched was “Tea for Two". Charles and Leisha were married on July 20th, 1929. They spent their wedding night in Toronte at the new Royal York Hotel. Litte did they realize they would return to celebrate their 60th anniversary in the Royal Suite, the Tudor Roora: sleeping in the bed once used by Queen Elizabeth. Then The Watch Company folded, and Charles lost his job. The coupte sold their 7-room brick home in Toronto for $5000 to purchase a farm for the same amount at Colborne, Ontario. During the summer weather, the entire family would stop everything and go for a daily swim — the farming could wait. Charles had been raised in a religious family and was himself a pretty good lay preacher. On numerous occasions when the local minister became ill or away, rather than close the church, Charles was asked to fill in. During the next 7 years of his ministerial studies, Charles delivered Sundav ser- mons at 3 different churches. Charles graduated from Queens University as a tully ordained minister. Reverend Charles Judd was assigned a church at Northport, Ontario for the mandatory period of 2 years, before being called to various churches in Ontario and Quebec. Charles retired in 1970 and they moved . to Bloomfield, Ontario. For a long dime he still "filled in" for other ministers. Throughout the _ years Leisha not only cared for her home and family, but also helped Charles in his church work. She played the church organ, sang in the choir, and spent a lot of time involved with church activities. They were always treated well wher- ever they moved to, and cach manse they lived in was lovely and comfortable. Looking back, Charles remarks: "The years have been great years — excellent years!" Leisha smiles and nods in agreement. For 16 ycars, the Judds spent 6 months in Florida and 6 months in Ontario. Charles and Leisha moved to the North Shore in: 1992. The spectacular natural’ beauty of ¢ area attracted them, and they have family here. They have given up golf, but they walk a lot and love their home. Charles still enjoys 5-pin bow!- ing, belongs to the White Cane Club, listens to books, and plays bridge. Recently they have renamed from Ontario where they attended a pre-annive: cel- ebration. — Fifty-rwo family members’ were present. The Judds have 4 children, 12 grandchildren, and 21 great- grandchildren. Charles and Leisha cherish the glass box their children gave them as an anniversary gift.
