FOR THE past year, lawyer Dugald Christie has been pro- | viding free legal advice in the weekly clinic he started. in West Vancouver Baptist Church. Christie, a Delbrook resident with his own general practice downtown, said he first started the clinic for members of his church, but later decided to open it up to others when ‘‘(the church) wanted to réach out into the community.” “I find it very rewarding,’’ said Christie, who sees people by ap- pointment every Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. “I would love to expand this kind of thing." Christie said more lawyers:: should offer their services through churches and community centres, where they could benefit the com- munity and “enjoy giving legal advice.”’ Christie mainly counsels on matrimonial cases and civil con- cerns, some of which he said are ‘quite exotic.”’ DUGALD E. CHRISTIE 5 - Sunday, October 9, 1988 — West Vancouver Villager SERVICE IS AIMED AT NORTH SHORE LOW-INCOME EARNERS Lawyer offers free advice in WV church One case he successfully medi- ated involved a family that’ had given their dog to another couple, but wanted to ensure that their children would still. have visiting rights to the pet. “To them it was very impor- tant,”’ said Christie. * Jn mediating a dispute, he said he tries to avoid having the parties go to trial. Another of his goals is to nelp people become more confident in filling out their own court docu- ments. ‘I advise them, so it’s a self-help kind of thing,’’ he said. Although the service is aimed primarily at people who could not otherwise afford a lawyer, Christie said there are no restrictions, and that the clinic is also visited by people who are not low income. In the latter case, Christie said he encourages his clients to con- tribute to a charity of their choice in exchange for his advice. . Christie volunteers his time for the clinic and sets up appointments through the church office, where he holds the clinic Thursday even- ings. He emphasized, however, that “church matters don’t come into it.”” People interested in making. an appointment are asked to cali the church office at 922-0911.
