The program participants also have had heroin, cocaine, crystal meth and prescription medication problems. “The street drugs that we have been very challenged with in this commu- nity are heroin and cocaine, said Boivin. “What hap- pened by mid- 1997 was that heroin became very available not only = in Vancouver, but also here on the North Shore,” said Boivin. She said that heroin started to replsce cocaine despite the differ- ences in the drugs’ effect. Boivin said the most com- mon abused prescription medication is benzodiazepine (includes Valium). She said the goal was tO get a person = “sub- stance free” during the week. Boivin prefers to say “with- drawal manage- ment” instead of “detox” and call the people under treat- ment “partici- pants” instead of “patients” or “clients.” , The participants “misuse” drugs or alcohol. “We really cry to watch the language because we come from a philosophy in which language really defines who we are and how we practice what it is we do,” said Boivin. Ar the end of the week, participants get counselling. They may be referred to other programs including residen- Offered for detox tial treatment centres, o. they may join Alcohol Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. Boivin said that success was defined by the participant which does not necessarily mean abstinence from drugs or alcohol. “The expectation is absti- nence through the duration of the detox,” said Boivin. Boivin said money to run the program came after the provincial government shut down the Pender residential detox two years ago in Vancouver. The North Shore Community Withdrawal Management Program is for residents of North Vancouver. West Vancouver, Lions Bay and Bowen Island. Boivin said before the home detox program, North Shore residents were some- times admitted to Lions Gate Hospital to withdraw from alcohol or drugs. “That is a very, very expensive way to detox. It is also not necessary,” said Boivin. The program is paid for through the medical plan and is run through a contract with Seaview Alcoho) and Drug Services in West Vancouver. The North Shore Health Region supports the pro- gram. People are referred to the program mainly by doctors. Anyone wishing more informstion can call the Seaview Alcohol and Drug Services at 926-9260.
