Julie Crawford Film Reviews IT took me a few days to form an opinion about The Thin Red Line, director Terence Malick’s epic film about the battle of Guadalcanal. The existential, stream-of- consciousness style of the film means it’s best digested after a few days’ contemplation. There is no one discernible “hero” in the film, but a cast of a dozen significant, minor and cameo roles. The narrative relies on a tapestry of images from the past and voice-overs from the living and the dead, rather than a progressive sequence of events. It requires, therefore, almost three hours of concen- tration in order not to get lost. Nick Nolte is Lt. Col. Gordon Tall, who’s willing to sacrifice his troops for personal glory. Captain James Staros (Elias Koteas) is the man who refuses to send his men to the staughter. Images Edward Welsh (Sean Penn: is a workd-weary sergeant who shows he has a soft side when he risks his own life to get pain-killers to a dying soldier. James Caviezel is Private Witt, who keeps going AWOL but distinguishes himself in baztle, Private Bell (Ben Chaplin} is spurred on by rcomembrances of his wite. Thematically, Malick’s film is less about the war benveen the Americans and the Japanese and more about man’s inhumanity to man. The film opens in a setting where strife, much less war, is non-existent, Private Witt has gone AWOL and is basking in the harmony of a Pacific-island village. When he returns after battle ie’s clear that the war has ruined his earthly paradise. Disease, imported from the Americans or the japanese, has taken a lethal toll. The vil- lagers now fight among them- selves. The land too, suffers. As the U.S. soldiers make their ascent to the Japarese-held summit, they bob in and out of sight in the jush, undulat- ing grass. As the battle pre- gresses nothing but charred earth remains, and a singed baby bird dies in the dust. The Thin Red Line is a piece of art; but one that has been offered up at the expense of the story, which falis apart A Civil Action — Fri., Mon.-Thurs. 7:10, 10 p.m. Sat./Sun. 1:40, 4:10, 7:10, 10 p.m. A Bug's Life — Fri., Mon.-Thurs. 7:25, 9:30 p.m. Sat./Sun. 2, 4:40, 7:25, 9:30 p.m. At First Sight — Fri., Mon.-Thurs. 7, 9:45 p.m. Sat./Sun. 1:30, 4:15, 7, 9:45 p.m. Mighty Joe Young — Fri., Mon.-Thurs. 7:05 p.m. Sat./Sun. 1:45, 4:20, 7:05 p.m. Enemy of the State — 9:40 p.m. daily atthe end. There are significant char- acters who vanisit ar the close of the film, and seeminuly sig- nificant storylines that bead nowhere, A host of cameos are hit and miss: John Cusack and Woody Harrelson are good, but Jehn Travolta and George Clooney come off as parodies. Some notable names didn’t make the cut: Mickey Rourke, Bil Pullman and Lukas Haas all originally had roles in the tilm. The Thin Red Line is not for everyoae. There are many unanswered questions at te end, which may make viewers looking for a tidy resolution uncomfortable. Yee it’s worth the trustra- tion just to experience the beaiity of Malick’s film and the message he conveys.
