DURING the past few weeks, we have all been suffering from hot, dry weather, which we on the rainy North Shore don’t often experience. Unlike our friends and rel- atives in other parts of Canada, we're more accus- tomed to fairly cool cempera- tures and rain. While most of us feel that we have to just “grin and bear it,” here are some tips that will help us to be more comfortable and to avoid health problems: B Drink lots of water and natural juices even if you don’t feel very thirsty. Avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee and cola. @ Avoid going out in the blazing sun or heat when possible. If you mus: go out- side, stay in the shade as PNE adds shows for seniors much as possible and plan to go our early in the morning or evening when it is cooler and smog levels may not be as high as in the afternoon. Wear a hat. @ Take advantage of air con- ditioned or cool places such ‘as shopping malls, libraries or community centres. @ Keep shades or drapes drawn and blinds closed on the sunny side of your home but keep windows slightly open. Keep electric lights off or your cod: turned down low. @ Take a coal bath or shower periodically or cool down with cool, wet towels. B Weer loose fitting, light cotton clothing. @ Avoid heavy meals and using vour oven. @ Avoid intense or moderate - ly intense physical activity. While extreme heat is unpleasant, some of us may be especially valnercble. If you have a chronic illness such as diabetes or heart dis- ease, you need to be sure that your diet and medications are working normally. If you experience any unusual symptoms such as headache, confusion or weak- ness, you should contact your doctor for advice. One other group of seniors we need to remem- ber, especially on a hot day, are those who may be bedrid- den at home o7 in a nursing home. If possible, their beds should be moved to a cooler location, with a breeze trom cross-ventilation. A portable electrical fan would be a thoughtful giti, or friends could borrow or rent onc during a heat wave. And we mustn't forget our pets. The recent incident reported about Sheila Copp’s dog being left in a car in the heat is a goud example of how animals can be affected by warm weather. Be sure thar they have lots of fresh, cool water and some place to rest in the shade. My cat, who usually enjoys sleeping in the sun, has found himself shady spot on the balcony where he also gets a breeze. Since I began to write this article, the hot weather has eased, and titere is even a prediction of rain, However, there will be hot weather again, so we necd to remember these tips for helping scniors cope with the heat.
