Question: I've recently broken

up with my boyfriend of two years.

He has been calling me and showing

up at my apartment building and sit-

ting in his car outside of my work.

Ive made it clear to him that I don’t

want to see him anymore but he

won't listen. He is realiy starting to

scare me because he won’! leave me

alone. Is there anything the police

can do to make him stop?

Answer: What. you are describ-
ing is criminal harassment, or stalk-
ing. and the law protects you from
this type of violence.

Keep a written record of all the
times that he has called you, or when
you have seen him outside of your
work. Try and point him out to a co-
worker so you have a witness of his

“harassment if you need to go to
court, Call your local police or go to
the station and report the harassment.

You have told your boyfriend
repeatedly that you don’t want him
to contact you or follow you any-
more, so don't feel bad if you con-
tact the police. His continued
harassment is against the law.

You can apply for a “peace
bond” (recognizance) which will
hopefully deter your boyfriend from :
further harassment. No assault has °
to have taken place to get a peace
bond, only a reasonable fear that:
you or your property will be:
harmed. If you get the peace bond,
the judge will probably order that
your boyfriend not contact you (by
phone or in person) and is not to go
anywhere near your apartment or
your work,

In order to apply, you must take
a written statement (called an

“information’) telling of the harass-
ment to a Justice of the Peace (JP).
You will have to go before a JP.and
swear that what you have written is
true (“swearing an information”).
After this is done, the JP can issue a
summons for your boyfriend to
appear in court for a hearing. If the
harassment is really serious, the JP
may issue a warrant for your
boyfriend’s arrest, and hold him in
jail until the peace bond hearing.

The JP will issue a peace bond if
he feels there is enough evidence to
support criminal harassment.

Be aware that your boyfriend
may choose to disobey the order,
and contact you again. If he decides
not to obey the conditions of the
peace bond, call the police right
