Victoria’s gracious gift of a long weckend allowed time for a pleasant run to the 108 Ranch, and we indulged ourselves by taking the Cariboo Road. That road had figured large in both our lives, before and after we married 50 years ago — it deserved a return trip. For me, and the whole of the Northern Interior, it was the way to the coast, meaning holiday country. We had to lay over at Ashcroft one night each way — after all, it was 500 miles. For him, it was his living, driv- ing a freight truck from Van- couver full of groceries, making the return trip with empty beer bottles from the army camp. Took five days of the week — two up, two back and a day there for changing loads. He'd stop at Clinton to sleep, 12 hours from home. The pro- prietor thoughtfully left keys to available rooms on the desk counter — you were expected to put a log into the heater before you went up to bed. He got $14.50 per week, plus expenses. Guys on that run today, they’re in Cache Creek in four hours, Prince George another four. Their dollars-per-hour rate would have kept us for a-coupie of months. So a lot of our travel-talk this trip was ‘‘Remember?”’ stuff. “The rond used to go right round that cliff there, remember? They’ ve cut right through it!” “There, look down by the river, there’s a piece of the old road.” We talked about battling Tunnel Mountain in the winter snows, and where you used to turn in for the view of the chasm, and about the time the creek carried off my tooth brush. We'd overnighted in the cab, that trip. Ali those memories thrived on THE VINTAGE YEARS the music rolling off the tape. “Yes, sir, that’s my baby,”’ “Jingle, Jangle, Jingle, got my spurs to keep me single.”’ “Charley my boy, oh Charley my boy, vou thrill me, you chill me with shivers of j joy.’ Where you gonna find lyrics like that these days? The whole journey was a three-way stab at reconstruction, of the road, of the landmarks and mile houses gradually disappear- ing, of ourselves when young. The thing about all those corny songs was that they had melody. That's what strikes you most, hearing them again: the melody and the electric energy. The Charleston, darn, I was too young, can you believe it, to be Beacon Hill Lodge sits peacefully on Capilano River’s sunny west side. Nestied among tall ieeting history allowed to learn that dance, but a flapper in the neighborhood showed me the basic steps one day, exposing a lot of knee, believe me, and hands waving jaz- zy signals. All the bands seemed to go in for dirty licks on trombones, and banjos going full bore. There’s Al Jolson pleading for his mammy, there’s the dizzy lyrics of Three Little Fishes who ‘‘{fam and they fam right over the dam.” We had two days and a bit, en- ‘joying the glorious countryside. The 108 as is isn’t history, but the land it sits on was one of Lord Egerton’s holdings, as with his compatriot Lord Martin Cecil : down the road a bit. - The 108 tag signifies its distance from Lillooet, which was Mile 0 on the original Cariboo Trail to the gold fields in Barkerville. The countryside itself is the star of this playground. Lovely rolling, wooded hills and innumerable small lakes and meadows make it possible to offer guests oppor- tunities for riding horseback or trail-bixing, for hay rides and stage-coach experiences, skiing and swimming and hiking and golf on a superb course, and just plain flopping around, if that’s what you feel like. ; You surely aren’t going to suf- fer anyone organizing you. Lots. of people come just to con- template all the others who are actually doing all those things. A great attraction for this observer is the remaining evidence of the Cariboo fence. It’s called a snake fence by many, because when you lay the - ends of these four logs on the ends of those four logs and want them to stay nicely connected for . the next 50 years, you’ve got to angle them rather sharply, so your fence sort of meanders ina friendly way from here to there. So what if it takes more room than barbed wire — this country - has room to spare. There are some impatient types, who hammer spikes to keep the logs in line; and some show baling | wire wrapping, a sign of impa- tience. There are especially fancy ones that display three thin poles - leaning on one another to hold the fence-log ends; they’re very at- tractive but very rare, too. If you must take one home, take one of those — they're real Cariboo. cedars, Beacon Hill offers every convenience in. intermediate and extended care living.
