Trustee requests advance
notice of press releases

A WEST Vancouver 45 School
District trustee has asked that
local politicians give the school
district advance notice before they
release information to the press
relating to schools. -

Trustee Margot Furk made the
comment: at Monday - night’s
school board meeting in reaction
to a front page story published in
the Oct. 9 News. .

West Vancouver District Mayor
Mark Sager charged in the news
story that school taxes were un-
fairly high in the municipality
compared with other B.C. school
districts,

Sager released a 17-page press
package. Oct. 7 that included a

copy of a letter serit to the educa-"

tion. and finance ministers pro-

testing what the mayor called an_

_ ‘Unjustified residential school tax

increasé. A report analyzing the
formula used for residential
school tax was also included in the

Ferguson was the oniy member of
the schvol board to get advance
notice that the information would
ve released to the newspaper.

“I was informed one hour prior
to the press release and I politely
declined to join in,’’ said
Ferguson.

Sager said in the Oct. 9 story

that the provincial government
should scrap a new school proper-
ty tax formula because West Van-
couver residents would end up
paying the highest school taxes in
the province.
