Police chief trades work for a horse IN APRIL. West) Van- couver’s deputy police chief will be trading police work for a horse ranch in the Cariboo. By Jeremy Hainsworth Contributing Writer Deputy chief of pofice Jack Ross will retire after 35 years of police work, the Jast 27 of them with the West) Vancouver Police Department. Ross became deputy chief 34% years ago. Asked if he would miss West Vancouver, Ross said, ‘absolute- Iv. U consider the West Vancouver Police (department) to be one of the finest in Canada. At the Gime recruits had to sign on for five years, something that concerned his father. He counsell- ed Ross to take a full-time job and think abour what he wanted to do. Ross took a job at an insurance company. One and a half months later, he applied to join the RCMP. After two years with the na- tional force, Ross joined the Winnipeg City Police where he stayed for seven years before moving to the West Coast to join the West Vancouver force. “it’s the only thing To ever wanted to do as fur as a voca- tion,”” he said. “Tee always been happy being a policeman. I've always enjoyed coming to work, but I'm also looking for- ward to retiriag.”* But Ross said he dosnt envy those just starting their careers in police work. There are, he said, too many demands placed on soune of- ficers. “Everythings more technical and there’s tots of frustrations.
