Christmas fund volunteers to make deadlines scramble Residents asked to donate early to North Shore Xmas charities ““WE’RE IN business.*’ That’s the message from Pat Orr, coordinator of the North Vancouver Christmas Bureau, which opened its doors Nov. 15 to douations from the community. By Elizabeth Collings News Reporter Already in the Christmas bureau’s first four days of opera- tion 150 applications were received from families for toys, food hampers and food vouchers, Orr says. And she expects many more to come. “f hate to say it, but I think there are more needy people out there this year. I think it’s the rent situation and the job situation,” says Orr. SEASON 5. TO SHARE Each year the Christmas bureau and the West Vancouver Santa Claus Fund enlist the help of the community to make Christmas a time to celebrate for everyone on the North Shore. Donations of non-perishable food, toys, money or time from volunteers are need- ed to make the campaign a suc- cess. And timing is particularly early this year, Orr says, because Christmas falls on a Tuesday. “Our hands are tied with the way Christmas sits with a weekend before,’’ explains Orr. While peo- ple tend to think of making dona- tions around Dec. 22, the Christmas bureau is accepting donations only until Dec. 20 because the volunteers have to make their hampers and be ‘‘out the door’’ by noon on Dec. 21. In West Vancouver, time for making donations will be cut even shorter this year, says Ruth Stout, executive officer of the West Van- couver Santa Claus Fund. Stout is asking that all dona- tions be made by Dec. 15. “*We’ve got to pack the hampers and that takes time — sorting everything. Still, people will bring things after, but I'm pleading for the 15th,’’ she says. The Marth Shore News, which is sponsoring !8 depot locations on the North Shore, is also urging people to act early on their im- pulse to give. ‘*We decided to use the theme ‘Give Early’ in a big way because both charities had real probiems in previous years getting all the hampers out in time,’’ says News promotions manager Cheryl! Carter. ‘“‘To help them alleviate that problem, we, along with the North Shore Credit Union and Lonsdale Quay, have put that Message on our transit advertis- ing.”’ The News will be publishing advertisements of where depots are located throughout the cam- paign. This year many businesses, THESE NORTH Vancouver Christmas Bureau volunteers are be- ing kept busy registering local families who need a little help over the holiday season. They are hoping the community will respond generously now with donations of cash, food and toys. The Roya! Bank at 17th Street and Marine Drive will also accept cash donations to the West Van- couver fund. Toy donations can be left after Dec. 3 at any West Vancouver firehall, where they will be ready for the firefighters who deliver the hampers to families just before Christmas each year, Applications for hampers and toys will also be available in the first week of December at West Vancouver's No. | firehall.
