. 16 - Sunday, April 29, 1990 - North Shore News FAsHION Hi Gertie searches for pageant contestants THE WHEELS are already in mo- tion for the 1990 Miss North Shore Pageant. By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reporter Pageant organizer Gertie Todd says her committee is busy lining up fashion shows, parade appear- ances and the crowning night — all that’s needed now are candidates. “My big thing now is can- didates,’"” says Todd, who is spearheading the tocal pageant for her 39th consecutive year. So she’s putting out the call for young women who will be between the ages of 16% and 21 by Aug. 31. In an effort to involve the com- munity more this year, Todd is in- viting people to nominate can- didates to run in the pageant this year. “I thought, ‘Why don’t we let people in the community nominate the candidates, the girl-next- door?’” she says. Todd adds the committee has lightened the work load of the candidates this year after finding that the hectic schedule of last year’s pageant discouraged poten- tial candidates from participating. This year, candidates can look forward to a month full of activi- ties leading up to the pageant in- cluding a fashion show, an evening at Grouse Mountain when the candidates meet the judges, fund- raising car washes and a social visit to a seniors home. In preparation for pageant night, the candidates receive week- ly modelling classes and profes- sional choreography instruction as well as etiquette and toastmistress lessons, During the pageant events, the candidates will be judged for deportment, poise, and public speaking abilities, Todd says. Among the judges at the Cen- tennial Theatre on July 28 will be CJOR deejay Dary! Braithwaite, former pageant princess Linda Jehn, former Miss Canada Bar- bara Kelly and world figure skating champion Karen Magnussen. The chosen candidate wins prizes as well as a ticket to the Miss PNE Pageant. Although the deadline to apply isn’t until June 30, Todd says can- didates should apply early to allow time to get sponsors. Applications and nomination papers for the pageant can be picked up at Perfect Setting, 124 West 16th, North Vancouver or by calling the store at 985-0555.
