journey, consider these tips and
trips from longtime biker Andy
MacGregor:

TIPS

e If you’re travelling in another
country, like the United States, it’s
a nice idea to put both the Cana-
dian and foreign flag on your bike.
You can meet a lot of friendly
people that way.

© Don’t be in a hurry. Take lots of
pit stops.

© Wear proper gear.

© Don't let yourself get fatigued —
five or six hours a day (about 300
miles) is a comfortable maximum
goal. Limit your night riding —
it’s easy to get disoriented.

TRIPS

Favorite daytrips:

© Take the Squamish Highway to
Whistler or Pemberton.

© Take the back roads to Mission
or Hope.

© Drive down Hwy. 99 south to
Mount Vernon, go left on Hwy. 20
(east) and ride to the Cascades and
Diablo Lake. This is a tonger trip,
about five hours riding time in
total.

Weekenders:

® Take the above-mentioned trip to
Diaklo Lake, travel through the
northern Cascades to Winthrop
and go north on Hwy. 97 to cross
the border into Osoyoos.

travel along Chuckanut Drive to
Burlington, go west on Hwy. 20 to
Anacortes (check in advance to see
when the Anacortes ferry leaves).
Ferry through the San Juan
Islands to Swartz Bay. Ride
through Victoria to Nanaimo and
ferry back to the North Shore on
the Horseshoe Bay ferry from
Nanaimo.
° A favorite biking highway is the
Hope-Princeton (Hwy. 3). Exit at
#5A to Merritt and enjoy driving
by lakes, on scenic, twisting high-
way with lots of ups and downs.
* Take three days and travel to
Cannon Beach in Oregon. Take
the I-S to Olympia (exit west on
Hwy 8) and travel south on 107 to
join up with Hwy. 101. Take the
coastal route south to Cannon
Beach or Seaside.
