Logo designed for continuing ed WITH OVER 600 courses of- fered each semester, North Shore Continuing Education served more than 20,000 students in 1989. As part of his strategy to at- tract even more adult learners in the 1990s, director Doug Ledgerwood approached graphic designer Garret Chong to design a logo for NSCE. This new logo is featured on the cover of the winter Joy of Learning magazine. Chong was born in Armstrong, B.C., and graduated with honors from Emily Carr College of Art in 1986. Expo 86 kept him busy painting murals for Inland Natu- ral Gas and the panels for the Air, Sea and Land exhibit. In 1987 Chong opened Ideographic, his own company. His clients include Du Maurier, Anna Wyman, Goh Ballet, the Arts Club and Firehall theatres, Derek Simpkins Gallery of Tribal Art and many corporations. He also designs book covers and has developed menus for some of Vancouver's finest restaurants. Chong recently discovered the pleasures of teaching. Last fall he taught Introduction to Graphic Design at NSCE and will be of- fering it again in the winter and spring semesters. The course features design his- tory and influences, basic design development in black and white and color, typography, advertis- ing ethics and a field trip into the city to critique billboards.
