Bill Black, a senior Westbay engineer, said the company’s elec- tronic Modular Sub-surface Data Aquisition System (MOSDAX) is a significant improvement over ex- isting systems because it permits continuous monitoring of groundwater quality and pressure from numerous depths in the same drill hole. for testing and monitoring Exicting systems allow only one probe to collect data from a single level. Black said the system is the oniy one of its kind in the world and could, in the long term, give the company and its products access to a $100 million annual market. “The groundwater business in the United States alone is well over $1 billion per year,”* Black said. Major applications for the system include geotechnical (min- ing, dams, bridges, tunnel founda- tions), hazardous and nuclear waste management and ground- water resource management. The loan to Westbay was one of four totalling $1,243,000 awarded Jan. 24 from the Western Diver- sification Fund. If approved, the new rate would increase Sunshine’s per-kilometre charge from $1 to $1.10. The company’s flag rate, or the tate at which a taxi’s meter starts running, would remain at the cur- rent $1.40. Sunshine officials cite increases in company wages, cab insurance and car parts and services as reasons for the rate increase. The fare increase must be ap- proved by the Motor Carrier Commission and the three North Shore municipalities. Westbay already — sells monitoring equipment and services in Canada, the U.S., Japan, China, Italy and the U.K. Its big- gest clients will continue to be organizations involved with groundwater resources and in- dustrial and hazardous waste sites." Westbay plans to spend close to $t million on market product developments over the next two years and will undertake an ag- gressive MOSDAX marketing campaign in the U.S., Pacific Rim, the U.K. and Europe following developing and testing of the MOSDAX prototype. Federal funding will help the company complete MOSDAX development and launch its mar- keting campaign, Westbay, which was established in West Vancouver in 1973 but moved to North Vancouver in 1982, currently employs about 24 people. The MOSDAX project is ex- pected to create an estimated 10 jobs directly at Westbay. Also receiving Western Diver- sification loans were Insight Elec- tronics Corp. af Nelson ($150,000); Vancouver’s B.C. Mc- tion Picture Association ($176,400); and Exor Data Inc., also of Vancouver ($450,000). He started when he was seven with the help of his father and then graduated to doing them on his own. He attends St. Edmonds School in grade 7, where his favourite subjects are Science and Math. He loves to play basketball and hopes one day to win a basketball scholarship to help his studies to be a doctor. He also loves to travel.
