tS - Wedaesday, January 18, 1989 - North Shore News SPORTS NSWC HOCKEY — Fiames melit Steelers IN WEST Coast Junior Hockey League action over the weekeuad, the North Shore Winter Club Flames rebounded from a 5-3 home-ice defeat at the hands of the Port Coquitlam Buckeroos Jan. l4, to down the Steelers by the identical score the following night in Grandview. On Saturday at home, the Flames were the victims of the old “goal off its moorings before the puck crossed the line’’ irick, resulting in two disallowed goals in their 5-3 loss to the Port Co- quitlam Buckeroos. The Flames got cff to a good start with Jason Loewen opening the scoring from John Cox and Rich Haldane at the 13:32 mark and then Andrew Merilees combin- ing with Scott Gordon and Ken Savage with only six seconds re- maining in the period to head into the dressing room with a 2-0 lead after one. Twenty-nine seconds into the se- cond period the Flames took a 3-0 lead on a goal by Ken Bubr from Savage and Scott Stirling. But jus? over a minute later, the Flames’ defence got caught up ice and the Buckeroos hit the scoreboard with their first goal of the game. Late in the period and im- mediately following the first of the Flames’ two disallowed goals, the Buckeroos rapped in two unanswered markers before the period ended to leave the teams deadlocked at three each. At 6:32 of the third period, 30 seconds after the Flames’ second disallowed goal, the Buckeroos went ahead 4-3 and then added their insurance marker at 12:03. Over the three periods the Flames outshot Port Coquitlam In Sunday’s game at Grandview, Sean Morrison and Gordon spearheaded the Flames’ attack with a pair of goals each en route to the team’s §-3 win over the Steelers.
