Growing up in West Vancouver, Sorensen studied in B.C. under Arthur Erickson and Jack Shadbolt before moving to Lennoxville, Que., where he now lives. Numerous private and corporate collectors have been attracted by his ability as a colorist and his concern for shape and structure within a work. ‘ From a first group showing in 1962, the artist today continues with his own exhibitions as well as teaching painting at Bishop Uni- versity. THE VANCOUVER Children’s Chamber Choir sings to a third-place spot at the prestigious Kathaumixw competition in Powell River recently. SIN ING TO SUCCE Local youths proud of choir WHEN HER group did not place fourth, Andrea Baird gave up hope of a respectable placing in the prestigious Kathaumixw — interna- tional choral competition. When her group — the Van- couver Children's Chamber Choir — was named third among 30 top competitors, the North Vancouver singer started to cry. “lL was so happy,” Baird, 11, said of that day. ‘““We were the youngest and smallest choir — | didn’t think we'd place at all. It was a total surprise.” Joining the choir 3% years ago, Baird is one of a number of North Shore youngsters who sing with the group under the guidance of director Rupert Lang. West Vancouver choir member William Donald, 13, has friends who tell him he should be playing rugby, cricket or basehail rather than singing. “As | have lots of fun at the choir, 1 tend to disagree," said Donald, who continues with the choir after two years to foster pro- per singing skills. “yd never been in a (top-quali- ty) choir — it’s just a great experi- ence.” Not wanting to waste a good musical ear — as well as having fun — has prompted Baird to keep on with her 30-minute practice sessions each day. As to reaction from friends, “I've never been teased about it once. Most of them are envious because they can’t sing; they would love to be in a choir.” Baird, Donald and the rest of the Vancouver Children’s Chamber Choir will perform the award- winning program from the Powell River Kathaumixw competition Sept. 28 at Christ Church Cathe- dral in downtown Vancouver. Twenty spots are available in the group’s concert and training choirs, and selections are by audi- tion; For details: 926-6953 or 926-6304. VIDEO GAME RENTALS — gontrol deck > $4.
