Lifestyles. 27 - Wednesday, November 11, 1987 - North Shore News Students write for cash prizes THE NINTH annual Secondary Schools Essay Contest, sponsored by the Greater Vancouver Regional District, is being held again this school year with three new topics and bigger prize moncy. The contest, which drew a re- cord number of entries last time, is open to students in Grades 9, 10, ft} and 12 at all schools in the Lower Mainland including those in North and West Vancouver. One of this year’s topics — ‘If 1 were mayor..." — asks students what immediate and long-term goals they would set for their community if they were the mayor. Other topics deal with recycling and the importance and impact of Vancouver International Airport to the Lower Mainland. First prize is $500, second $400 and third $300. In addition there are 10 merit awards of family memberships to the Vancouver Public Aquarium, UBC Museum of Anthropology, VanDusen Botanical Gardens or a hardcover book. Submissions may be made throughout the school year but no later than March 31, 1988. Entries should be not more than 2,000 words, typewritten (double- spaced) and include the student’s name, age, address, phone number, school, class and bibliog- raphy. The entries are judged on content, research, general ap- pearance and use of language. Graphics may be used. These are the topics for the 1988 competition: e if | Were Mayor... Although Bufton went into home teaching with both eyes open and a trained teacher’s background, she admits the deci- sion to do so did not come easily. “It was a hard decision for me to make, even as an educator, because it’s not the standard form for society,”’ she said. Bufton is enthusiastic about the possibility of B.C. adopting the voucher funding system for schools. ‘I really think educa- tional options are a fabulous idea. ¥ would hope it includes and en- courages people to bring about situations like mine.” Said Education Advisory coor- dinator Tunya Audain, “It’s a growth movement in education. It’s positive because it’s a regeneration of education from the grassroots and it’s growing with all of the supports and resources needed available.’’ Audain said most parents choose home education for their children because they feel they lack a sense of control in a traditional school education. “Half of the parents go to home education because they feel schools are not satisfactory and half go to it organically — they feel the kids shouldn’t be institutionalized at all,”’ Audain said. ; For more information about the home education movement contact Audain at 926-9081.
