Even though next spring’s show is almost totally dependant on how healthy the plant remains over the next few months, we allow our at- tention to be diverted to such meaningless things as barbecues, holidays, Sunday afternoon foot- ball, and other wastes of time. Now is the time to lay down the second application of rhodo and azalea food in order to feed both the emerging foliage and the beginning stages of next year’s flower buds. ’ Use a fertilizer that has been especially prepared for acid-loving plants with an‘N-P-K ratio of ap- proximately one part nitrogen to three parts pkosphorus and two parts potassium such as 4-12-8 or 6-18-12 and applied at label rates. This is also the time to begin dead heading your plants. I am not referring to any ‘sadistic forms of butchery or arcane voodoo rituals here, rather the removal of’ the spent flowers and possible seed heads. This is done to prevent wasting . valuable energy on the develop- ment of seed when it could be bet- ter spent on the creation of a more vigorous plant and future flower production.
