THERE’S FUN, romance and
nostalgia in the history of West
Vancouver told in the light-hearted
. style of B.C. author Bruce Ram-
say.

In commemoration of its 75th
anniversary, West Vancouver has
published A Place of Excellence, a
chronicle of the municipality from
1912 to 1987. Mayor Lanskail
comments that the story is a blend
of humorous anecdotes, reminders
of hardships and examples of
community spirit.

Many of the present residents of
West Vancouver will remember
and be amused at the recollection
of some of the shenanigans that
marked the ci:y’s 5Gth anniversary.
Ramsay describes the mock bull
fight that was staged in Ambleside
‘Park when some spoil sport in-
terfered with plans for the real
thing.

Described as a ‘‘homecoming
book’’ by Ramsay, it is laced with
familiar names of streets, parks
and areas and the stories of the pi-
oneers for whom they were
christened. It tells of the first ships
to explore the area and the first
families on the North Shore, and
features numerous photographs.
