A38 - Wednesday, April 25, 1984 - North Shore News ON NUCLEAR PLANTS China, U.S. reach agreement AMERICAN SOURCES say the governments of the United States and China have reached agreement on a treaty that will allow American firms to take part in construction of nuclear reactors in China. The announcement was made on the eve of President Ronald Reagan's visit to Mainland China, the first trip he has made to a Communist country since his election. The sources said they were not ready to formally an- nounce agreement to. the treaty but said the negotia- tions between Chinese and U.S officials had been completed in an atmosphere of some optimism and with agreement that it 1s in. the best interests of both coun- tnes to have a treaty. The official announce- ment of the treaty is ex- pected to be made by Reagan Thursday, as part of ceremomies on his arrival in Peking. Regan will spend six days in China, meeting with top-level officials and tour- ing the country. As well as the an- nouncement of the agree- ment on peaceful nuclear co-operation, it is expected the American president will discuss stronger trade, ar- tisuc and diplomatic links between the two countries. Regan will become the third American president to visit China following former president Richard Nixon’s historic visit in the 1970s. Since then there has been a thawing of relations between the two countries and in- creases in exchanges in the arts and science fields and in trade.
