Al9 - Sunday, May 6, 1984 - North Shore News STEVEN FONYO VERNON’S STEVE Fonyo, attempting to retrace Terry Fox’s run across Canada — and finish the one-legged runner’s Marathon of Hope — ts beginning to capture the imagination of the country. While it is doubtful that Fonyo, who has also lost a leg to cancer victim, will have the impact Fox did on his abortive attempt to run across the country, his slow progress across New- foundiand has started the fund-raising ball rolling again. As Fonyo nears Port- aux-Basques this week he is making slower progress than did Fox but he has raised almost twice as much money for cancer research as his hero did in 1980. Fonyo, whose progress has been delayed by recurr- ing bad weather -across Canada’s confederation province, has so far managed to raise $40,000 for cancer research. Newfoundland’s bad weather, and the response of its people to what Fonyo is attempting, have so far held him to an average of 19 kilometres a day, welt below the target of 32 kilometres Funds rolling in for one-legged runner he had set before the run. Fox averaged 35 kilometres a day on his heroic run in 1980 that was stopped short in Thunder Bay, Ontario, by a recur- rance of the cancer that would claim his life within months. | Fonyo hopes to end his run at Vancouver’s B.C. Place in September or October. ‘Don't panic’ says Lalonde FINANCE MINISTER Marc Lalonde warned Ca- nadians not to panic as the Bank of Canada announced a one-third of a percentage point increase in the central lending rate Thursday. The boost in interest rates, expected to help slow the decline of the Canadian dollar, takes the central bank’s rate from 10.84 per cent to 11.13 per cent. ft is likely interest rates climb higher because of pressure on the Canadioan dollar because of the dif- ference between Canadian and American figures. So far, the Canadian prime lending rate ‘is slightly below that of the U.S., a reversal of the usual roles. The Canadian rate normally has to be higher than the U.S. rate to attract foreign capital. The increase in the Bank of Canada rate appears to have had some impact — the Canadian dollar rose to 77.67 cents U.S. Thursday from 77.31 cents the day before. the Way FIRST LADY WIG EXCHANGE Bring your old wig to First Lady, and we'll give you «S17 OFF any wig $65 t0 $100, regular 525 OFF any wig over $125, regular EAR PIERCING NOW 40% OFF Have your car prerced now, and save 40% on gold plated cubes and circles.
