B6 - Sunday, October 23, 1983 - North Shore News ME entertaixmcmt Ee ‘Sweet Bird’ takes CORRUPTION usurps innocence just as age devours youth in Tennessee Williams’ play Sweet Bird of Youth now playing at the Arts Club on Granville Island. The play concerns Chance Wayne, an aging golden boy whose life has been a series of failed chances and humilia- tions, and his love for a girl in his home town, St. Cloud, called Heavenly. She is,as her flame suggests, angelically fair and sweet natured; she is an image and a memory of lost innocence more than a character. The Metal 1451 LONSDALE AVE. Pas Te Heavenly the Sweet Bird of Youth has flown, taking with it the innocence and fertility of cheir love. By the time the play opens, it is already too late for them and we are left to watch the final scene in their tragedy. When we meet Chance he is waking in a luxurious hotel room with an aging film star, who is trying to escape the depressing reality of be- we rants ing a famous ‘has-been’. The best acting in the Arts Club production is done by Doris Chillcott in the role of ‘Princess’ whose magic kingdom is one of pretense, drugs and younger men like Chance. She is the un- disputabie star of the production. The scenes with Chillcott and Winston Rekert, who plays Chance, are also quite {I fd egg er flig powerful; there is an unwill- ing bond betwen the two characters that comes across very well to the audience. Rekert is much weaker when interacting with other characters in the play but gives a very acceptable per- formance in which he is well aided by looking physically perfect for the part. Supporting character roles are also well played, especial- ly by Owen Foran as Heavenly’s father, Boss Finley, and Lillian Carlson as Aunt Nonnie. Set design by Ted Roberts is also worth note. Sweet Bird of Youth con- tinues at the Arts Club Mon- day to Friday at 8:30 p.m., Saturdays 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. with a two for one matinee Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The play runs until November 19.
