8 - Sunday, January 19, 1986 - North Shore News Doug Collins © get this straight Do the men of God who are working to put South Africa down the drain enjoy their egg in the morning? Do they worry about the deaths of those little kids who died recently at the hands of terrorists? You may remember the news item: ‘‘Seven whites, including three women and two toddlers, were killed yesterday when...’’. The question occurred to me when 1 heard Rev. Robert Smith on the radio. He’s the Moderator. of the United Church of Canada . and had been visiting Zim- babwe, where the World Council of Churches was busy batting the communist-run African Na- tional Congress on the head. Terrorism in the name of God, sort of thing. The interviewer didn’t ask about that. But had he . done so our follower of the. Prince of Peace would have replied that black kids have - died, too.. Besides, we have the word of our am- «| bassador to the U.N. that ; South Africa is, the most -evil regime in the world. “Don’t we’ see.the evidence every night?. . : Not Teally, teacher: What we see is a country that is being depicted that way, the fascist South Africans being . “so kind as to allow. masses of: correspondents to roam. .- : the land. Disaster aided by media has: happened before, you ‘Remember... Iran? . Remember how’ the Mike - Wallaces ‘charged ‘forth to -. put the scoundrelly Shah on -- «the spot. for : not | being .democratic? There was a preview of this trend when Tsar Nicholas of Russia got chopped for being The Tyrant of Europe. Western liberals went dotty with joy. Yet his"Russia did have a democratic. parliament of a sort, plus .an opposition : press and courts that could actually acquit people ac- cused of political crimes. As soon as nice kind Mr. Lenin took over, however, all that bourgeois stuff went out the window and the Reverend -Smiths flocked to. Moscow ‘to give him a cheer. The Tsar was seen as so bad a villain that not even ‘King George V, his cousin, dared to offer him refuge. ‘Only a few hopeless reac- tionaries like Winston . Churchill had any time for what was then the worst regime in the world. Yet, like South Africa, the Tsar's Russia had ’ something called public opi- _nion. -But. ever since the glorious October Revolu- tion the country has had on- ly organized opinion, Plus . its close relative, of course — Gulag — where the TV networks don’t prosper. .. So now South Africa is - the most evil regime in the world. Mr. Gorbachev, . meanwhile, gets to look like ‘some sort of liberal in the. ., pages of Time magazine. _ And Brian Baloney, a sanc-_ * timonious idiot if ever there . was one, tells the U.N. that - -Tom Hurrell — the coor- 5 dinator of all shop services, Tom... ~ .. offers twenty years experience in J the: automobile repair industry. - John: Aylward — formerly. ; of Peter Brand Motors, John brings eleven years of experience -- inthe West Van market with a strong background in repair of im- port: ‘mod els. Van now “the Mandelas will one day prevail’’; He means Nelson Mandela, the communist terrorist who tried to blast [ his way to power, But wait! There's something not quite right with the picture. Should we adjust our sets? Don’t { see Bishop Tutu, a slave in the most oppressive regime in the world, running around New York inviting Americans to bash Botha? Don’t I see eager reporters on hand to record the arrest of ‘‘Winnie’ Mandela? (‘Good old) Winnie!’’) | Don’t I see headlines an- nouncing: ‘‘South Africa Drops !2 Treason Charges’’? . Has there ever been such a headline out of Moscow — or Havana? Do-we see Sakharov’s wife holding press conferences .in New York to denounce Gor- bachev? How evil is most evil? Oh, I nearly forgot. When the Great Emancipa- tion takes place, please don’t send the Reverend } Smiths and the TV cameras to South Africa. They won't be needed then, any more than they are needed in Tran, Vietnam, Kampuchia, Estonia, Afghanistan, or the Gulag Archipelago itself. As for those dead toddlers, we're sorry. But you can’t make omelettes without breaking eggs, can you? Ask anyone.
