Sprinklers, smoke and

Hospital this summer.

The $1 million project
follows the recom-

fire marshall, said hospital
administrator John Bor-

and the nursing unit tower
built in 1961.

A man being held in a cell
at the North Vancouver
RCMP detachment Sunday
evening was found hanged
by his own shirt.

e man, a 47-year-old
North Vancouver resident,
had been arrested at 6:50
p.m. for being drunk after
police responded to what
they term a “disturbance
call” on a local street.

He was found at 8:15 p.m.,
hanged by his own shirt
which had been tied around

the cell bars. He was given |

mouth to mouth
resuscitation, but éfforts to
revive him by RCMP officers

and by staff of Ligns Gate
Hospital proved futile.

An RCMP spokesman said
the man had been checked
in his cell 15 minutes before
he was found hanged and
that an inquest is expected to
be held.

Police are withholding the
identity of the man while
they attempt to contact next
of kin.

50% pay increase was the
key to unlocking strike

The 189 members of the
Canadian Association of
Industrial, Mechanical and
Allied Workers (CAIMAW)
voted 77 per cent in favor of
a 33 month contract that
brings the average wage to
$8.44 an hour, said union
representative Cathy
Walker.

The contract, ratified
Monday, includes im-
provements in vacations and
benefits, including dental
plan, maternity and
paternity leave and life
insurance.

Wage increases are $1.50
an hour increase im-
mediately, $1.25 an hour
plus cost-of-living-allowance
June 1, 1982 and $1.00 plus

ditional $1.04 an hour,
bringing their base rate to
$13.50. «
