The North Shore's other newspaper, The Citizen, printed its final edition last Wednesday. The following morning Arthur Weeks. vice- president of Sterling Newspapers Ltd., owners of The Citizen, informed staffers that the 22-year-old paper was ceasing publication. Publisher Norman Nicholl later confirmed to The News that the closure was per- manent but declined to elaborate. By Thursday afternoon both Weeks and Sterling President David Radler were stated to be out of town for several days and unavaulable for comment. Twelve editorial, ad- vertising and = circulation employees have been laid off as a result of the closure. The printing operation, Horizon Publications Ltd., will continue in business. The paper had _ been rumored to be losing money for a number of months prior to Thursday’s an-. nouncement, which one staff member said “came as no great surprise.” Circulation problems, particularly in West Vancouver, were a contributory factor, the staffer indicated. The Citizen was born of a marriage in the early 1950s between two former North Shore weeklies, The North Shore Review and The North Shore Press, which then appeared for Several years as the North Shore Press- Review. The Press-Review was purchased in 1957 by veteran Vancouver newspaperman Hal Straight and renamed The Citizen in the following year. Originally confined to North Vancouver, The Citizen was built up under Straight to become — at that time B.C.’s_ biggest community newspaper.
