mosaic found at Hadrian's

Villa:

In Florence, a special kind
of work was produced.
Instead of glass, the arti-
sans used pieces of inlaid
multi-coloured —_ gem-

- stones on a black marble
background. This _ was
sometimes called pietra
dura, or Florentine mosaic.

The pictra dura earrings
and brooch or pendant suite
pictured here are from Italy
around 1860. They're set in a
simple 18-karat gold frame.
The rose motif is made trom a
type of white agate called chal-
cedony. The banding of the
stone gives this set a special
quality.

The leaves are made. of
jasper, on a black slate back-
ground. The fineness of this
craftsmanship is incredible,
and the jewelry looks as stun-
ning today as it did in the 19th
century, The market value is an
estimated $1,000 to $1,500.

Highly collectable, these
treasures can still be found and
will only increase in value.
