Gardens across ue country are abundant with blassoms of every. type, colour and hue, and bunch- es of cut summer flowers overflow onta sidewalks from corner imarkets and shops. It’s time to get out there and treat yourself, as many of the most enticing tlowers are at their best prices now, while the flowers are in their natural peak blooming sea- sons, Once you get home with an armful of flowers, however, you need ta know what to do with them. Here are a few tips to remember: @ DO condition the flowers by cutting the stems diago- nally under water. This pre- vents air bubbles from forming that can block water from being drawn up another reasan why harmful bacteria forins in vase water. 8 DO use all vases for irrangements that incorpo- rate fine flowers, such as gladioli, Liatris, Delphinium, snapdragons and bells of Ireland. BDO use vases with a belly (such as urns or ginger jars) for mass or filler tlowers. Mass flowers include lilies, tulips, daffodils, roses, car- nations, sunflowers, and chrysanthemums, Filler flowers include — statice, baby’s breath, waxtlower and Queen Anne’s lace. B DON'T combine flowers which don’t naturally blend well. Consider their mor- phology, texture and colour. She was immediately awakened by the dripping of my pee through the bed- springs (there were no mat- tresses on these bunks), and, being the good Brownie she was, called out for assistance. “Help!” she cried out in distress, “Shannon Nelson’s peed her bed, and it’s dripping down on me!” In no time at all Tawny Owl was at our bunk to assess the damage. “Just sleep as vou are tonight,” she ordered, half asleep, “and we'll sort out this problem in the morning.” My sleeping bag, and all the clothes I was wearing required drying in the main cookhouse, where, to my complete humiliation, they were hung in front of a huge fire and the entire Brownie pack the next morning. Naturally word of the incident swept through the camp, and 1 heard the otker Brownies say things like “There’s Shannon Nelson, she peed her bed” I barely made it through the next three days, wearing the dried but not laundered clothes I had wet my bed in, and sleeping in the pee bag, as the other Brownies referred to my Dad's lucky sleeping bag. Of course, my experience didn’t keep me fron sending my own children off to camp. { mean really, who do you think summer camp is for any- way, the kids, or the parents? into the stems.
