THE Canadian Mentai
Health Association,
North and West
Vancouver Branch is
hosting free screenings
for depression on
Thursday, Oct. 7 at the
North Shore
Neighbourhood
House.

The event is part of the
Canadian Mental Health
Association (CMHA) of
“National Depression
Screening Day.”

Last year 90 people took
part in the event on the

orth Shore.

According to the CMHA
North and West Vancouver
Branch, one in 10 North
Shore residents experiences
depression in their lives,

Signs and symptoms of
depression includes:
feelings of sadness or irri-
tability;
® loss of interest or pleasure
in activities once enjoyed;

@ changes in weight) or
appetite;

changes in sleeping pat-
terns;

feelings of guilt, hopeless-
ness or worthlessness;

& inability to concentrate,
remember things or make
decisions;

fatigue or loss of energy;
restlessness or decreased
activity;

A person should see a dac-
tor if they have any of these
symptoms that have persisted
for more than two or three
weeks and are alfecuniy their
daily life.

tion, therapy and emotional
support.

The free screenings are
confidential. People attending

the event will receive informa-
tion about depression and are
invited to speak with health
professionals present.

North Shore psychiatrists
Pedro Paragas and Werner
Pankraty are among the men-
tal health professionals will
answer questions and provide
information.

Last year, statistics indicat-
ed that 1,500 people in the
province participated in’ the
depression screening day, 74%
of the participants showed
serious signs of depression.
