the winter months sailing
two routes, Week about, with
every day including a stop at
beaches vou thought only
existed in glossy brochures.

Most of the time we
anchor in quiet bays, some-
times as at Phi Phi in the Iee
of spectacular limestone
cliffs, and invariably in a
place that appeals to our
large group of scuba divers.
Others try snorkelling or
head to a beach where surf
ing, water-skiiing or dinehy
sailing is laid on by the ener-
getic sports team.

Shore excursions include
Penang, Langkawi and fames
Bond Island, but some pas-
sengers were quite happy to
wave the others goodbve and
then enjoy Star Fiver and its
two pools more or less like a
private yacht.

Mind you with service
tike we had on Star Fler,

sports team coached novice
scuba divers and then there
was Miss Noi, a smiling Thai
who backed up the able
Filipino chef and brought
joy to the hearts of jaded
cruisers accustomed to: meals
out of deep-freeze contain-
ers.

Miss Noi did what big
ship chets cannot do: she
went ashore and found juicy

big fresh prawns and herbs
atthe market that were
served up, Thai-style, fora
memorable lunch.

The casual armosphere of

Star Flyer, with no dressing
for dinner and a deck bar
like a British pub, made it
easy for passengers to mix.
They ranged from honey-
mooners to shipping tycoon
Fred Olsen, and were from

ara

all over the globe.

What they had in com-
mon was a spirit of adven-
ture that brought all band:
on deck when the sails went
up, usually just before sun-
set, When Captain Gerhard
would give the signal for the
theme music tram the movic
1492. Then some of us brave
souls volunteered to help the

riggers winch the canvas into
place, first the stavsails, then
the big fishermen, a tloulla
of jibs and then the mighty
square sails. The ship would
lean a little. the air would
freshen and it was just us
and the sea.

We did have engines,
under the control of a
Canadian chief. bur at this
moment their main work was
running the galley, the air
conditioning and niaking ice.

No doubt they had ice
galore in the wild days of

Airlines. Phuket is well
