THE fall that killed 11-year-old Philip McLeod on ~ Dec. 20 was a tragic accident that has shocked the scouting fraternity in Vancouver. The young scout was hiking the Mount Harvey Trail near Lions Bay with five other scouts and two leaders, Hz was wearing a crash helmet and carrying an ice axe when he slipped on hard-packed snow but apparently Mcleod hit a inquiring bump and lost his grip on the axe that could have stopped his fatal slide. Doubtless there will be recom- mendations forthcoming from Scouts Canada about winter hiking in difficult terrain (perhaps roping on sloped snow should be required), but let’s hope that properly supervised hikes can continue to challenge boys in as safe a manner as possible. The world-wide organi - zation has much to offer a boy in terms of personal growth.
