Dreamworks’ animated feature is the top-grossing film in North America this week. Testing ti ROWithout Limits eke Starring Billy Crudup, Donald Sutherland and Monica Potter. Now playing at Caprice Park Royal South. Without Limits is a tough sell. The film is based on the short lite and remarkable career of Steve Prefontaine, US. distance runner who held records in everything from 2,000 to 10,000 metres. Problem is, no one under 30 has heard of him. And save for Donald Sutherland as Prefontaine’s coach, there are no huge names to draw in the crowds, The biggest luminaries are behind the scenes. The pro- ducer is Tom Cruise and the director is Robert Towne, of Chinatown fame. Maybe that’s why the film languished in limbo for a year and a half. Or maybe it’s the anticlimactic ending. Without giving too much away, let’s just say that this isn’t one of those feel- good endings Hollywood is so fond of. And the movie shouldn’t be confused with Prefontaine, now on video store shelves after a fess-than-ilustrious run at the box office two years ago. But Withore Limits is detinitely worth seeing. Ken RegavCamora 5 OPRAH Winfrey (!eft) and Kimverly Elise star in Beloved opening today at North Van's Esplanade 6 Cinemas. ; The Silent Crippler (First in a series) Le Tt JULIE CRAWFORD Firm Reviews The relationship between Pretontaine (Lavercitg the Abbotts’ Billy Crudup) and his coach more than compensates for breaks in race action. Sutherland delivers a tine pertormance as the rigid coach trying to rein in his star athlete, He's at wits with, and in awe of, his frontrunner. “Pre” rans full our and ahead of the pack. To give any less than his best would be deceptive and spoil the “work of are” that is the race. Like most great coaches Bill Bowerman is as ego- tistical as his track phenom, but Sutherland is both mentor and groupie and saves the role from being monochromatic. By the way, Bowerman has a litle pet project on the side: shoes with wattle-iron soles that he calls NIKEs. Billy Crudup captures all the intensity and bottomless drive of an Olympian, and Monica Potter (Cou Air) is good as the only woman who leads Pre on a chase for her aftec- tions. Steve Prefontaine suggested that the purpose of running was to test the limits of the human heart. Ina time when athletes in all sports seem to be on strike more often than they are on the field, when sports stars bite the cars off their opponents and spit on their umpires, Steve Prefontaine is a hero indeed.
