Sunday, June 21, 1998 — North Shcre News - 8 north shore news MAIL Box N. Van City church exp Dear Editor: Re: the article in the June 10 News regarding the proposed expansion of the Alliance Church at 23rd and St. Georges Avenue. As the church’s closest neighbor, I am appalled at the idea of quadrupling the size of the building. Like Coun. Stella Je Dean, I also know people who attend the church and they are good people, it’s truc. However, this does not mean that expand- ing the building is “an exccllent idea,” and I suspect that if it were right next door to Coun. Dean’s home, she would feel quite dif- ferently, too. A building the size that they propose in a residential neighborhood would ruin resi- dents’ views, lower property values and create impossible traffic problems. We are already. at the saturation point in this neighborhood with traffic and parking. While it is true a portion of the traffic and parking is due to the Lonsdale Rec Centre across the street, there is also considerable congestion from the church. Frequently we are unable to park infront ‘of our own home and parking for visitors is almost impossible at times. This is not just on Sundays as one would = expect, but is ongoing throughout the week due to varying activities at the church, includ- ing daycare and a private school. Gerry Lorentzen, representing the church “assured the council it wasn’t the church’s intention to open a school.” That’s because they are already operating a private school at thar location, I have observed the children many times, in uni- form, filing across the street to play at the rec centre tennis courts — their PE. class, 1 would guess. Why else would they want to add a gym, 20 classrooms and a computer lab to their building? How many churches need a computer !ab? Many of the other services that the church claims to offer arc duplicated across the street at the ree centre and at the Silver Harbour " seniors’ centre a block away. If the Alliance Church waits to expand because its congregation is too large, let them find other suitacte places to build churches to serve their congregation better. Other churches do no just grow like a mushroom in one spot. They are scattered around the community to serve it better. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those passengers who took the time to fill our the questionnaires that were available on board. It’s valuable to get feedback from the community. Our passengers told us that in gcneral, this type of vessel could be a real asset to the route. There was strong support for the car deck Jayout and capacity. Passengers also liked the fact that the vessel is faster and more ccor:omiical to oper- ate. Many passengers suggest- N. Van’s Dear Editor: Two thumbs up and acco- lades galore to the Seymour Demonstration Forest Division and the Greater Vancouver Regional District. They have just completed the Old Growth Trail, the far end of which begins immedi- ately adjacent to the Seymour Fish Hatchery and extends back 1.3 kilometres towards Rice Lake through some of the most awesome natural old growth forest in B.C. The trail is actually a masterfully built boardwalk two feet above the forest floor. My ‘close inspection could not detect the slightest trace of trail clearing debris, small sawn ends or even any sawdust Women Dear Editors: We are conducting an his- torical study of the first wornen called to the Bar in B.C. between 1912-1930. We are presently looking for informa- tion on the following women: Annie Jane Agar (called in 1921), Marion Elma Beck (1923, daughter of A.E. Beck), Saddie Brown (1926), Hazel Victoria Crane, (1930), Lilian Elizabeth Cruickshank (1920), Skeena ed improvements in the fol- lowing areas: B engine noise in the lounges @ Size and utilitarian design of the seating @ Loc-tion of washrooms outside the lounges. These suggestions and others will be passed on to the design team for consideration when the next Century class vessel is slated for construc- tiun. The majority of the stu- dents who completed the questionnaires, did’ nor sup- port the design of the Skeena Oucen, Their concerns centered on the noise level in the lounges, the separation of the lounge accommodation into four “pods, and the lack of - food service. While the noise aspect can likely be addressed, and the lounge desiga may be re- new trail or dropped nails. Ic almost appears as though the boardwalk was. immacu- lately constructed the way it enhances and complements the pristine environment and abundant fish habitat. Several viewing platforms are discreet- ly placed for hikers to sec salmon spawning channels and giant old growth spruce; fir: and cedar. This extraordinary facility’. demonstrares land stewardship at its best. It does more than bind and blend the feeling of natural resource co-dependency; - it will provide a sense of peace and magnitude of serenity to all those who experience this trail. If you would ‘like to share your observations of these * Seymour * Brockman worked, it’s untikely that food service on a a 20-minute sail- ing will be considered of prime importance to main- tain. This was a very valuable exercise. We were able to assess suitability of the vessel from an operational stand- point. More importantly, our pas- sengers provided excellent input and suggestions on the type of service that is impor- tant to them. We will contin- ue to consult with our passen- gers and work with the Bowen island Advisory Committee members as we continue our efforts to provide good ser- vice in. a cost-effective “man- ner. Chunn : Help Liberals get rid of Glen Dear Editor: The North Shore is a curi- ous place at times. I have just read Noel Wright’s column on “Socreds still alive and ready.” Recently, I read in your paper that phone calls to B.C. Reform are forwarded to a North Van number, and | also saw a picture of a North Van resident who is trying to create yet another party. Whav’s in the water com- ing off our mountains? The last time | looked the North Shore was solid Liberal, and the Angus Reid poll put the Liberal Party at 47% in the province. ; To all the North Shore political inventors: you are welcome to join the Liberals and help us throw Glen Clark out of office.
