12 ~ Friday, April 25, 1997 — North Shore News Photo suomitied THE Art in Bloom floral festival runs at the Vancouver Art Gallery from May 1 to 4. More thaw 50 fioral design- ers are participating, each to create a piece inspired by a work of art in the gallery — just as this design, from last year's festival, refiscts the art work behind it. Art in Art gallery fundraiser kicks off Wednesday By Deana Lancaster Contributing Writer deana@ninews.com FAITH Darnbrough has been in her West Vancouver garden spray- painting métsusmata for her Art in Bloom piece this week. Darnbrough is one of more than 50 fura! designers offering their talents to Are in Bloom, a. fundraising project for the Vancouver Art Gallery. This will be the floral festival's fifth year, and it will also be Darnbrough’s fith year participating. The designers, who have backgrounds rang- ing from commercial florists to teachers to amateur floral designers, are paired with gallery masterpicees as inspiration for their contribu- tion. “It’s really a challenge,” said Darnbrough, who had formal taining and has taught Tkebana, tie art of Japanese flower arranging. “We have no choice in what picce we get.” In past years she has created designs based ona black and white photograph of faces: “... it looked like a police line-up ..."; an upside- down tree; a modernistic painting of triangles; and Jast year — a particularly difficult challenge — seven squished plastic bottles in a frame. “You know, I love beauty. Jkebana is about the joy of beauty. And sometimes | just don’r understand modern art.” This year her floral design is to be inspized by a red chinese silk sculprure, That's where the pitsumata comes in, It’s aper-like material which originally came from apan. It’s been stored in Darnbrough’s base- ment for *35 or 40 years. Mima pack rat.” She's using it to represent the two compo- nents of the silk sculpture: an embroidered wonnan’s face with long hair on red silk, and a reclining figure in gold leaf. Her plan also includes Hydrangeas anid Stargazer lilies, partly because they are lasting and must endure for the ran of the show. “TL always look for the outstanding Jinc,” she said of the artwork's influence on her design. “Ikebana is very linear, it’s got soul to it.” The festival kicks off on Wednesday, April 30 witha “Meet the Designers” gala from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Other festival activities include private gar- den tours, tea and gallery tours and a flower market, already running Fridays, featuring a variety of spring biooms on sale to the public at the Robson St. entrance.
