4 — Sunday, September 29, 1996 ~ North Shore News WY truck crash site scene of devastation By Robert Galster and lan Noble A dirt-laden, runaway truck killed a pedestrian and severed two power poles at noon Friday in what is becoming a hor- rifyingly familiar story here on the North Shore. Jady Johnson, a parts clerk at Wetmore Motors at 22nd and Marine in West Vancouver, saw the truck travelling “exception- ally” quickly southbound on 22nd before the Marine Drive intersection. She looked over to Marine Drive to see if the driver would get through the intersection “without hitting anyone.” He didn’t. Johnson saw the driver, who police didn’t identify to press time, broadside a Toyota 4- Runner, sending it skyward as high as the waffic signal lights. “Tt was very bloody ‘high, she said. The ‘sports ‘utility vehicle ' ended up on its side nearly a block away in an apartment yard, after crashing through ‘a hedge. ~ Johnson saw the dirt billow- ing from the dump truck as she ra ran toward the accident. - “It makes you feel kind of weak when vou see people lying on the road and smoke coming, off the dump truck,” she said. “Someone must have been badly hurt.” The crash aftermath present- ed a grim picture: the dead and injured were scattered about; severed power poles knocked out electricity to a large area of West Vancouver; the 4-Runner and a parked Mazda had been hit, the dump truck lay on its side and power lines, dirt and rocks were scattered around it. Its back brakes were on fire. West Vancouver resident Bjorn Bjornson, 58, retired from a career with the local B.C. Ambulance Service, was struck. and killed. Another pedestrian and the drivers of the 4-Runner and truck were taken to hospital. The truck driver was released from hospital Friday. The two remaining at Lions Gate Hospital were listed in fair condition as of Friday after- noon. Tony Martin, owner of the Petro Canada gas station at Marine Drive and 22nd Street, said he put out the brake fire. He was. alerted to the accident in front of his station by the sound of crashing telephone les. “All we heard was a loud bang and then ran outside to see what happened,” said Martin who then called an ambulance. “It was so fond...” “The driver (of the dump truck) then came running into the shop louking for a phone,” said Martin. Martin told the driver an ambulance had already been called and rushed to put out the fire. However, before Martin could make it to the truck he had to cross amass of downed power lines on the sidewalk and road. “[ ran right through the wires,” said Martin. “Idiot, I didn’t even think.” As the News went to press, the truck driver was being ques- tioned by police. For the second time in just over a year, motor vehicle inspector Jay Northcott found himself blaming truck brakes in a fatal accident. “Preliminary indications indicate it’s his brakes,” he said. A Sept. 13 truck inspection’ in North Vancouver found only |@ six of 18 trucks had effective ; brakes. In August 1995, truck driver Baljinder Singh and Burnaby resident Wayde Police were killed after Singh’s brakes failed, sending his rig careening out of control down the Cut. In 1990 the’ brakes failed on a truck driven by Singh Ubhi. Two tourists died at the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal after their vchicle was struck. 10 really needs a zipper with a spring loaded pull?
