informing them of her potential
eligibitity but that Dykeman “rel
used” to circulate it.

“Dykeman submitted both his own
‘name and that of Harris to the

GVRD.
Dykeman surprised’ some coun-

cillors early this:year by voting in
favor of a trial logging program in
the watershed while on the water
committee after district council

watershed logging.
{Harris recently attempted to add
& motion to-the council agenda
- that asked ‘council to notify the
JGVRD that Dykeman’s name was
wrongfully submitted as a
- ‘nominee for the water commitice”’
and that her own name be put
‘forward as “the sole nominee.”’
However, Harris later told the

News that Dykeman ‘‘had taken

himself off?’ the water committee
candidacy...

Dykeman later described Har-
tis’: allegations and motion as
“frivolous and wrong.”’ ;

honor to a man who has been
both their healer and their friend
for over 30 veurs,

Physician Dr. Les Hassan, who
retired from a North Shore medi-
cal practice in) November was
given the Squamish ancestral
name, Nexws-Kiticn (healer), in a
special dinner ceremony held Dec,
2 at the Resource Centre on the
Capilano Reserve.

Elders, purents and children,
many of whom received their first
touch of fife from his hands,
listened as Hassan told the crowd,
“While T will cease to be your
doctor, UIE always be your friend.
You haven'h seen the last af me
yet.”

In a shortened version of a
naming ceremony, Ulassan was
wrapped ina ceremonial blanket
while members of the audience
were called by Chief Lawrence
lkaker (Sekyu), to act as witnesses
to the new nang.

An ocean canoe paddle, carved
by Squamish Nation carver Cedric
Ritly, « glass vase, a Cowichan-
knit toque and several other gifts
were presented to Hitssan after
several witnesses and other guests
shared personal memorics of the
physician.

Also present at the dinner were
the doctor's wife, Sylvia, his fa-
ther, Joha Harold, fis son Tom,
and his brother and sister-in-law,
Bob and Jill Hassan.

The doctor began his medical
career on staff .at Lions Gate
Hospital in 1962. He established a
private practice in 1964, operating
from an office on Marine Drive
an the North Shore, before mov-
ing in 1974 to his present location
at 147 West 16th,
