Smart takes World Cup gold

LICNS BAY resident John
Smart won his second ca-
reer World Cup freestyle
event last Saturday in
Tignes, France.

The 27-year-old Smart com-
peted against Leif Persson of
Sweden in the dual-elimination
men’s moguls final. Persson was
ahead on points 21-14 following
the first runs by both competitors,
but Smart pulled out a great se-

cond run, turning the tables on
the 21-14 margin in his favor.

Smart was declared the winner
of the gold medal after ‘‘turn’’
points were used to break the tie.

“I had some great semi-finals
last season, but no finals,"’ said
Smart, adding that it was ‘quite a
relief?’ to finish strong in the
competition.

{t was Smart's first World Cup
victory since Zermatt,
Switzerland, two seasons ago.
