26 - Wednesday, August 5, 1992 - North Shore News Gallery always operated at a loss From page 23 largely instrumental in organizing the monumental 1990 Artropolis Exhibit at the Expo Roundhouse. As acommercial success, Gallery Alpha was a dismal failure. Despite its positive critical ac- claim, it always operated at a substantial loss. Which is hardly surprising since its real motivation was no more predicated on remunerative gain than that of the Vancouver Art Gallery is. The facility was able to survive as long as it did only because it was directed and staffed by Gevoled supporters and was precariously subsidized by my own company, Polymorphous - Graphics & Design. . its continued commercial status . was thus retained only as an ex- pedient to protract its survival — a E circumstance that could not con- tinue indefinitely. One of the first gallery devotees to realize this was Carolyn Lair, the North Share Arts Commis- sion’s first cultural development officer and, according to many, its Patron saint. She advocated Gallery Alpha’s incorporation as a non-profit society and directed a $2,000 grant through the agency of the Central Visual Artists Association which received it on Gallery Alpha’s behalf. Ten months later, in April of this year, after many setbacks and delays, the North Shore Art Gallery Association was finally born with a constitution and bylaws drafted and incorporated by me and jim Felter. The dual purpose of the Art NOTICE OF A PUBLIC MEETING Gallery Association was to establish criteria and guidelines for the development of a major regional art gallery on the North Shore and to administer Gallery Alpha as an interim facility. In May, Gallery Alpha’s umbili- cal link to Polymorphous Graphics & Design was finally severed, and ! tendered my resignation as direc- tor to pursue the position of art critic for the North Shore News. in june, Jim Felter, now chair- man of the North Shere Art Gallery Association and acting in Gallery Alpha’s behalf, made a final appeal for help to Brenda Berck, the new cultural develop- ment officer who replaced Carolyn Lair. He was turned away empty- handed. Early in July, Gallery Alpha closed its doors for good. A Public Meeting will be held on MONDAY. AUGUST 10, 1992 at 7:30 pm in the Council : .
