Light opera society
opens with Iolanthe

AND YOU thought your
life was complicated.
Nothing can compare to the
tangled affairs of Iolanthe.

In Gilbert and Sullivan’s light
‘opera, the celebrated fairy marries
a mortal, gives birth to a half-
mortal, half-fairy who she tries to
get elected to British parliament.

Things get pretty confused in
lolanthe, but it hasn’t stopped the
North Shore Light Opera from
mounting its season opener at
Centennial! Theatre.

Dennis Kristos directs the cast
of 35 volunteer actors, with
musical direction by David
Millard and choreography by
William Rose. Deborah O’Connor
plays the title role of Iolanthe.

“Iv’s a satirical look at the 19th
Century British class structure,’’
said Kim Jensen, who plays Lord
Mountararat.

Jensen says that some of the
original lyrics have been replaced
with modern references — names
of current political leaders, the
GST and cross-border shopping,
for example.

The comedy farce, which open-
ed last night,
backdrop of meadow, pond and
brook and Westminister Abbey/
Big Ben.

folanthe runs tonight, March
19-21 and 26-28 at 8 p.m. An
afternoon matinee will be held
March 22 at 2 p.m.
