Andrea Miller has won a 1991
Lieurenant-Governor’s Award of
Recognition for her work in pro-
moting environmental issues.

The award is given annually to
three women in B.C. who have
made outstanding contributions to
the advancement of women in
B.C. in the areas of family life,
the environment and economic
opportunities for women.

Miller won-in the environment
category.

Anna Mason of Penticton won
in the quality of family life cate-
gory and Margaret Neylan of
Vancouver won an award in the
economic opportunities category.

“The commitment, courage and
vision demonstrated by all of the
1991 nominees for these three
awards is truly commendable,”
said B.C. Women’s Programs
Minister Carol Gran. “Each of
these women is living proof that
individuals can and do make a
difference.”

Gran’s ministry has established
bursarics in all post-secondary
education institutions in the pro-
vince. Twenty-five $500 bursaries
will be awarded each year to fe-
male students demonstrating fi-
nancial need and academic
achievement.

According to a police
spokesman, the suspect reads the
‘lost’ classified sections of news-
papers and phones the people who
have advertised losses, saying that
he has found what they are look-
ing for. He then requests money
to help pay for the return of the
“*found’’ items.

A West Vancouver resident
recently lost a Sheltie dog. An ad
placed in a local newspaper drew
the response of a man identifying
himself as Charles Johnson, a
trucker who drives a flatbed truck
between Vancouver and Chicago.
The man said he found the dog
and asked for money to pay for
the shipment of the dog back to
Vancouver.

And a local woman, who lost a
briefcase and placed an ad for its
return, received a call from the
same man. He asked that money
be wired to cover the cost of
returning the briefcase.

The police have traced the
man’s calls to a library in
Chicago.They believe the suspect
is scanning a number of newspa-
pers across North America and at-
tempting to fraudulently secure
money from loss victims.

The police warn that the suspect
is still operating. The fraud in-
vestigation continues,
