8 - Wednesday, February 27, 1991 —- North Shore News MAILBOX Reader supplies more info Dear Editor: In a recent letter to the editor, “Ample evidence not backed,” J. McPeanne indicated that he/she would like some facts to prove my statement that sex education pro- moting contraception has increas- ed promiscuity, leading to epidemics of sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancies. For a comprehensive review of the effects of this type of educa- tion, [I would recommend the book Has Sex Education Failed Qur Teenagers?, a research report by Dinah Richard, Ph.D., avail- able from Focus on the Family publishing. On page 53 of this book it states, ‘‘The Louis Harris poll commissioned by Planned Parent- hood showed that teens whose parents have discussed contracep- tives have a greater likelihood to be sexually active than those whose parents do not discuss con- traceptives in their sex education. “The poll also showed that what applies at home applies in the classroom, as well. Teens who have a sex education course that discusses contraceptives have a 50 per cent higher sexual activity rate than those who have had a sex education course omitting con- traceptives or who have not had any sex education whatsoever."’ J. White West Vancouver Values should be taught Dear Editor: If you can’t be good, be careful. That seems to be the general sen- timent behind the installment of condom machines in high schools. We've been taught to be careful, but no one has told us what being good means. In the majority of schools across the country, the education children receive about sex is factual, bio- logical and straightforward. The underlying message is, “there are the facts, we cannot present any values for fear of be- ing biased, so choose your own.”’ Presented with a condoning at- titude by respected elders, how many of us will choose standards that hinder our social life, restrain our desires and oppose the values of our friends? Is it any wonder that the group among which the AIDS virus is spreading the most rapidly is high school teenagers? Teaching sex education without values is like giving a licence to drive without learning about road signs. S. Brown West Vancouver SPCA thanks donors Dear Editor: I would like to thank all those who have generously supported the work of the SPCA.
