Mary and The Maz MOST OBSERVERS of the federal scene describe Don Mazankowski s power as second only to the Prime Minister. The others say The Maz is more powerful, The most intrizuing invirauion He received thi summer came from our MP. Associate Detence Minister Mary Collins, We ot the North Shore media were invited to dine with our host and the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada at the venerable Park Koyal Hotel Not only wa: a pleasure te see an old sparring partner: ance again, and to witness more ev dence of Ms. Coliins’ ever increas- ing sphere of influence, the op- portunity to meer the **North Shore Press Corps”* was noi to be missed. Surely the federal! ministers’ regional office at Canada Place was having me on? With the skep- tical enthusiasm | usually reserve for UFO hunts, ! was off to meet my colleagues. Here's the good news: ‘The North Shore Press Corps’” ts composed of four people from the North Shore News (led by the publisher, no less!), and one in the ‘‘others’’ category (C.Q.S. Hoodspith). eee As Mazankowski handlea ques- tions about the economy. bureau- cracy, native blockades ana the image of the government, my mind wandered back to my first encounters with him, and a pro- minence that began to emerge in the early 1970s. And even during a private chat with him later, imagination ran back even further. It’s Ottawa in 1968. The Tories, who months earlier felt assured of victory behind Robert Stanfield, had just been clobbered by a geriatic hippy from Quebec. The party strategists are sorting through the ashes, studying the names of new MPs. “Say ... who's this guy from Veg something Alberta?’* ‘*Vegreville,’* the mate replies, ‘‘Named for a French mis- sionary.” ‘Say ... now we are cooking — a Frenchman from Alberta?’* The other shakes his head. **Vegreville is one of the largest Ukranian settlements in Canada.”’ “Yeah | guess this Maz-er-ski is a Hunky, not French.” **He’s a Polish Catholic.*’ This puzzled the party veteran. **How'd he get there ... lost?"’ ‘*How do I know ... maybe his folks got on the wrong boat.’* ‘*Where is this place?" ‘*East of Edmonton some- where.”” “Saskatchewan is east of Ed- monton.”” **Vegreville is between Edmon- ton and Prince Albert.” They study the map. One guesses: ‘‘Must be a Dief sup- porter,’’ but the other interjects: **He has been. But they say this guy is solid cabinet material.”’ The other just laughs. **A home town Chamber of Commerce type from a place no- body ever heard of, who lists Knights of Columbus as if that was a plus, in a province domi- nated by bible punching fun- damentalists and Ukranian Or- thodox ... a Polack with a name that belongs on a football field. This is our future?’’ Don Mazankowski was 33. weak Asked at our recent soiree if he wanted to be Prime Minister, he just chuckled. ‘‘I’m close enough "A Place To Go When You're Pregnant And Need Support: m 229 tonsdaie in Vancouver Cait forth Vancouver 687-7223 | QIRTHRIGHT| Cail 987-7313 » Free Pregnancy Test > to that office to know that | don": need the abuse." When it was pointed out that the Conference Board of Canada had just forecasted that Canada’s economic performance would be seventh and last out of the Gi-7 nations, he just shrugged: “When we were number one, everyone said, ‘So what."" Gary Bannerman OPEN LINES If there is a style about *‘The Maz”’ that is unique, it is his abil- ity to be aggressive in the face of criticism, without sounding defen- sive, Maintaining an amicable demeanor, he assauits the critic with facts, historical comparisons and plausible conclusions. He does it with very few words. Only on the subject of the Mohawk blockades and other native protests in other areas of Canada, was he less than certain. In a sense, both he and Ms. Collins sounded evasive, but the problem was deeper than that. There is no answer. The official line is that policing is purely a Quebec matter. tven the backup deployment of the military was only possible upon the ins ttation of Quebec. Both ministers worned aloud about bloodshed if force were us- ed, and the subsequent ramifica- tions of that. When thes asserted their faith wiethe bargaining process, one sensed that it was a comtortable and “yliberate self-delusion. Gane of our group (the finance guy from tne “orth Shore News) had the best question. ‘Pf it were a eroup of Hell's Angels wielding banned weapons what would the government do?”’ Or words to that effect. The question was precise. The answer was a mum- ble. It would have ended swiftly and efficiently. If there was blood- shed, officials would have pon- derously explained that far worse carnage would have been the reward for inaction. One of the most astonishing riddles in Canada is the native question, In these current inci- dents, they get away with crimes that would not be tolerated from anyone else. Yet their societies are so laced with problems -— social, economic, self-respect and other- wise — that it is the shame of the nation. Handouts, patronization or tolerance of law breaking will make things worse, no: better. The cruetlest thing that can be done to the natives is to continue the current debate for a few de- cades. There will be none of them left and the issue will become a historic curiosity. It has been a steadily shrinking group from day one of confederation. Assimilation and patronization havedone that to people from the earliest chapters of hussan history. Well-meaning politicians and native leaders, by pursuing im- possible goals, are guaranteeing destruction: one way or another. The qualit 4 of your life is in your name! DONA People with these names feel a restless, sometimes reckless, driving urge to par- ticipate actively in the ac- complishment of something worthwhile. They feel an impa- tience with the mundane things of everyday living. There is such a complexity in the nature of people with these names. Following are some of their characteristics in capsule form: Quick, clever and creative ~ exceptional promotional ability - independent - difficult for them to merge with others - want to act on their own deci- sions free from interference — too much aloneness - rather repressed and secretive — moods of depression and self- pity - nervous and sensitive ~ somewhat shy and extremely reflexive - intuitive - easily upset - usually feel misunderstood — find it hard to enjoy happiness in personal af- fairs — have bitter experiences. If Donald is mostly called Don — this would add greatly to his stability and sense of responsibility to others although he wouid still feel the sensitivity of the full name. WHAT IS IN YOUR NAME?
