Cars and trucks jam the highways, emitting grimy clouds of exhaust, and an ominous haze floats on the horizon. Vehicle-related air pollu- tion is a serious problem for Ca- nadians in large cities, yet it’s no less a concern to suburban and rural residents. Emissions are carried hundreds of kilometres by wind, causing widespread health and agricultural probiems. In recent years, almost all Canadian cities have exceeded federal air contamination limits, especially during the summer. SMOG’S SOURCE The yellowish-brown haze that sometimes hangs on the horizon is known as photochemical smog. Currently, 40 per cent of urban smog is attributed to vehicles, which release large amounts of nitric oxide, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. In the presence of sunlight, the mixture of these gases reacts to form ozone, peroxyacetyl nitrate and aldehydes — substances that can lead to health problems. CLEAR THE AIR There are steps we can take to reduce smog and air pollution Cars made safer From page 25 curve, the rear wheels turn in the oppesite direction to provide a fast respouse. Then, as the steer- ing wheel is held steady through the curve, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels for smooth cornering. As the car comes out of the curve and the driver straightens up the wheel, the rear wheels turn towards the direction of the curve in order to increase stability. The steering angle of the rear wheels never exceeds two degrees and at high speeds it is usually just a few tenths of a degree. If the system should fail, the rear wheels automatically straighten up. P perhaps the most interesting aspect of Volvo’s active safety project is its computer controlled suspension (CCS). CCS compen- sates for the natural roll of a car when cornering, ensuring that contact with the road surface is — the same for all four wheels. CCS keeps the car level at all times, even when driving on very uneven roads. Though still in the development stage, Volvo's active safety con- cept promises to make driving safer by increasing resistance to water planing, and by improving stability, roadhotding and steering response. caused by vehicles. If you must drive, switch to natural gas, where available. Nat- ural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel; by converting your vehicle to natural gas, carbon monoxide and reactive hydrocar- bon emissions can be reduced by at least 30 per cent. ADD ADVANTAGES In addition to its clean-burning qualities, Natural Gas for Vehicles (NGV) is a highly efficient, safe and economical fuel choice. NGV users across Canada have reported fuel cost reductions of up to 50 per cent over gasoline. And because natural gas burns so cleanly, vehicle maintenance costs can be reduced. NGV is a simple add-on system, quickly and economically installed by an authorized mechanic. The process leaves your vehicle's orig- inal fuel system intact, so you can easily switch between natural gas and gasoline, even while driving. NATURAL GAS There are more than 20,000 natural gas vehicles in Canada, and over 117 refuelling stations — with more to come. In addition, a home refuelling appliance that plugs into the household natural gas system for overnight vehicle refuelling will soon be available in selected Ca- nadian locations. Tune your Mazda!
