ARE WORTH THE TRIP

MELBOURNE — Two weeks in Australia sounds not near-
ly long enough, like three hours on a golf course. But just as
any golf course can be played between nine o’clock and
noon (although Turnberry once took three hours and 15
minutes) you don’t really need a sabbatical to enjoy
Australia.

The sheer size of the place plus
the tyranny of distance to get there
have tended to make Australia off
limits to all but seniors and

Quantas to Cairns in Queensland,
and lush resort courses like the
Port Douglas Sheraton Mirage.

The beauty of golf Down Under
is that you can get tremendous
variety with a modest travel
schedule, it is relatively inexpensive
($10 green fees are commcn) and
the weather’s always good some-
where.

Then there are epic diversions,
such as the Great Barrier Reef and
Daintree National Park, and
delightful retreats such as Silky
Oaks Lodge where a curious trav-
eller can sit by a tranquil gorge and
ponder the aphrodisiacal leaf of
the randia tree and consequent
etymology.

Australians, of course, speak the
same language (well, almost)
sprinkled with bon mots. A car-
penter working on condcs border-
ing the Sheraton Mirage course
retrieved my ball from his lun-
chbox saying ‘‘No worries, myte’’
while up the road at Mossman
