CONVERSION TO APARTMENTS

$1.5 mill

THE TRANSFORMATION of the fong-closed Interna-
tional Plaza Hotel’s rooms to apartments is nearing com-
pletion, according to a spokesman for the owners of the

Plaza complex.

Rick Reale, Lehndorff Property
Management Ltd. vice-president,
said Monday conversion of 148 of
the hotel’s rooms to 100 apart-
ments is approximately three-
quarters complete.

He estimated that the suites
would be ready for viewing June |

bedroom apartments since the In-
ternationa) Plaza closed perma-
nently in November 1987.

The hotel, which originally
opened in North Vancouver in
1974, closed after the Toronto-
based VIP Hotels Ltd. decided fi-
nancial and occupancy forecasts
for its North Vancouver hotel were
too bleak to justify continuing the

International Plaza operaticn.

Reale said changing the rooms
to apartments was extremely 2om-
plex and time consuming because
all the rooms were different and
modifications had to be imade
around existing plumbing, ‘‘bu: we
wanted to do it right. We’re happy
with what we've got and we hape
the public likes it, too.””

Only cosmetic changes were
made to the hotel’s four penthouse
suites, which will also be rented as

The new suites will include such
features as air-conditioning, but
Reale said rentai rates have yet to
be determined.

In addition to remodelling the
hotel’s rooms, Lehndorff is
negotiating lease of the Plaza’s
meeting and banquet spaces, bail
rooms, nightclub and restaurant
with a major food and beverage
company.
