DEATH OF HIROHITO

Atrocities not forgotten

Dear Editor:

Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke's manly
decision refusing Australia’s official presence at Jap-
anese Emperor Hirohito’s funeral renewed my pride
of Australian birth and also in my Second World War
service in the Royal Australian Air Force.

Revisionist historians and foreign policy of some
countries would mislead the people into a false belief
that Emperor Hirohito was both oblivious to war
decisions and consequently Japanese atrocities in-
flicted on Australian ard Canadian Nationals in the
Second World War through ‘‘Japan’s Imperial Con-
spiracy’’ (see David Bergamini’s 900-page book of
documented evidence of Hirohito’s guilt).

The ‘‘Son of Heaven's" death is an occasion to
testate the slogan of our Royal Canadian Legion —

“Lest we Forget.’' Therefore, I recall the 22,000
Australians captured by the Japanese of whom only
14,000 returned, many dying within months of
homecoming because of brutal beatings, starvation,
torture and enslavement by the ermperor’s troops.

I remember the orders to the Australian Army’s
jungle fighters at Sanananda, New Guinea, Christmas
1942: **Save the last hand grenade for yourself,”” (to
avoid a worse fate —- capture by Japanese soldiers). I
shudder at the recollection of parade ground
beheading by samurai sword of Flight Lieut. W.E.
Newton, VC, of 22 Squadron, shot down at
Salamaua, New Guinea March 18, 1943.
