10 - Sunday, October 25, 1987 - North Shore News THE GIRL guides in Second Seymour Company are con- tinuing their fight to save an eagle nesting tree near the end of Dollar Road in Dollarton. As part of that fight, about 20 girl guides and their guide leader Mary Huntington appeared before North Vancouver District Council Monday night. The nesting tree is located on municipally-owned lands and is near land that is slated to have housing built on it as part of the Roche Point Land Development Project. The eagle nest itself is estimated to be 12 feet in diameter and six feet deep and may have been used by generations of bald eagles. Huntington asked council to provide a minimum 40-metre (132 feet) buffer zone between the housing development and the nest. Huntington asked that lots 166, 167 and 172 not be developed as “this would give the minimum 40 metres buffer zone. We would also like to sce, ideally, the 100 metre buffer zone which would include nine other lots from 162 to-174. This we feel would give them their minimum buffer zone.’’ Calling on people at Roche Point Development to respect the environment, Huntington said that residents should ‘‘be willing to tailor their lifestyles to fit the en- vironment .— or live in an area more suitable to their needs.”’ Council will make a final deci- sion on the eagle nesting grounds at its regular Oct. 26 meeting. By PAUL HOULE Contributing Writer recommends lot 166 ‘‘be held from development until such time as it is determined that the eagles are no longer utilizing this tree for nesting purposes.” The report also recommends that the Roche Point Drive project be delayed until the district natu- ralist can determine whether the eagles have left the nest for the season. As well, the report contains a general recomrnendation that the tree be protected for continrid nesting. The eagle nest is located in a massive Douglas fir which is estimated to be 400 to SCO years old. The huge nest — located high up in the tree —- can be seen from the Second Narrows Bridge.
