And that's when all the eyes of the hockey world are going to be on the 1982-83 edition of the Vancouver Canucks. They will be watching to see if what happened last year was an indication of things to come from Lotus Land, or whether it was just a shght aberration on the traditional path of hockey on the west coast. If he’s not behind the bench coaching, then he's off pre-scouting Canucks’ next opponent, watching a game on TV, meeting with his associates or being in- terviewed by the sports media. Harry Neale General Manager Neale was an_ali-star defenceman with the Toronto Marlboro juniors but he never made it to the NHL as a player. He quickly gained another coaching position, this time with the New England Whalers (now Hartford in the NHL), and remained with that club for two seasons prior to joining the Canucks in May, 1978. In his three seasons at the helm, Canucks have progressed from 63 points to 70 then 76 last season, making the team one of only four in the NHL to improve in three straight years. Neale coached his squad to a 26-33-16 record in 76 games before having his tenure as coach cut short by a leaguc suspension. With the team doing well under Roger Neilson’s hand, Neale relinquished the reins at the end of his sentence, opting to prepare for his transition to the gencral manager's chair two months down the road.
