With pride and the terri

The testing time will soon
be over and the gruelling 80
game league schedule will
begin for the Vancouver
Canucks on Tuesday, Oc-
tober 5 when they play host
to the New York Islanders.

And that's when all the
eyes of the hockey world are
going to be on the 1982-83
edition of the Vancouver
Canucks.

They will be watching to
see if what happened last
year was an indication of
things to come from Lotus
Land, or whether it was just
a shght aberration on the
traditional path of hockey on
the west coast.

And for the guys at the
centre of all this attention?
They know the answer. They
know that they're not the

To say that Harry Neale eats,
sleeps and drinks hockey
may be understating the
facts. If he’s not behind the
bench coaching, then he's
off pre-scouting Canucks’
next opponent, watching a
game on TV, meeting with
his associates or being in-
terviewed by the sports
media.

Neale was an_ali-star
defenceman with the

Toronto Marlboro juniors
but he never made it to the
NHL as a player. Following
as bricf career as a high
school teacher in southern
Ontario, be signed on as
coach of the hockey team at
Ohio State University. After
four seasons, he left there to
coach Hamilton of the OHA.

With the advent of the

same team they were at this
time last year. They know
that while most of the faces
may be the same, the spirit
has changed.

These players and coaches
know that they have added a
collective i

ledge that together they are
capable of accomplishing

All pro athletes have pride
and desire. That’s one of the
special areas that set them
aside from the average
recreational player or fringe

pro.
Its when that pride of

‘individuals manages to come

together that a team

becomes something special.
And anyone who watched

the Canucks come together

World Hockey Association
in 1972, Neale joined the
Minnesota Fighting Saints as
assistant to Glen Sonmor,
current coach of the NHL
North Stars. Before the
1972-73 season ended, he
was made head coach.
During the next two years,
he guided the Saints to an
84-648 record and was 30-
25-4 in 1975-76 when the
team folded.

He quickly gained another
coaching position, this time
with the New England
Whalers (now Hartford in
the NHL), and remained
with that club for two
seasons prior to joining the
Canucks in May, 1978.

In his three seasons at the
helm, Canucks have
progressed from 63 points to
70 then 76 last season,
making the team one of only
four in the NHL to improve
in three straight years.

Neale coached his squad
to a 26-33-16 record in 76
games before having his
tenure as coach cut short by
a leaguc suspension. With
the team doing well under
Roger Neilson’s hand, Neale
relinquished the reins at the
end of his sentence, opting
to prepare for his transition
to the gencral manager's
chair two months down the
road.

That action struck a res-
and it was the very next
home game that the towels
were in full force, but not as
flags of surrender.

It was a great time for the
club and the fans. One of
those magical moments
where there is a definite
sense of communication
between the players and the
fans. Something to be
remembered for a long time.

the ice for that first gamc.,
they, more than anyone elise
know that they have to
produce all season long and
then through the playoffs.

It shouldn't be difficult for
the first couple of games.
The excitement will still be
there and so will the towels.
But it’s a long season and
that’s when the heart comes
into play.

Last year the Canucks
came together. This year
they want to take if just onc
step beyond. They can’t go
any higher than that.
